I chose Susan B. Anthony because she fought for so many breakthroughs in women’s rights. She fought during a time when women were considered a different, and inferior species to men. She was persistent, she never stopped fighting for what she felt the world should be like. Anthony fought for dress reform, was part of the temperance movement, fought to have women educated the same as men, fair wages and voting rights for women. Without the efforts of so many during these times, including Susan B. Anthony, women would be severely limited to this day. The work of her and others like her, was a momentous process that is remembered and respected to this day. I wanted to educate myself on her extraordinary work that bettered society.
As I was researching, I narrowed down my topic from Susan B. Anthony, to her effect on the 19th Amendment. I knew the value of having many sources and visuals in my project. They would give me a stronger understanding of what was occurring at that time. Anthony’s statement while she was on trial for illegally voting, was insightful and mentioned frequently in texts I read. I gathered information on the official ratification on the 19th Amendment and how one vote caused a drastic change in U.S. policies. Throughout my research I understood that Anthony needed lots of help from others who shared radical ideas. Others didn’t always share Anthony’s plan creating more barriers to overcome in the process of suffrage.
I decided to use a website for my presentation because of the features it provided. It allowed a higher word limit I could use to benefit my project. I was also intrigued that I still had the ability to remain creative. I was able to customize the project to my personal requirements and change the layout to better function my needs. I could also share more evidence and pictures relating to the theme of Breaking Barriers in History. I was able to showcase more, providing valuable insight into my topic both at the time and its effects now.
Susan B. Anthony’s effect on the 19th Amendment relates to the theme “Breaking Barriers in History”, during the time suffrage was still a very radical concept. Anthony and all the suffragists had to overcome many barriers. They had to get people to understand the issue of suffrage and change their prejudiced viewpoints on women in society. Anthony herself had to overcome barriers on how people thought about her allies and her efforts. Suffrage was a barrier, women had to fight, for a long time. Anthony had to fight to break the barrier of women voting. Even though she never witnessed the actual breaking, she still drastically connects. She helped pioneer the way for other suffragists who came after her.
